The Story of Smith?

The music world might be wondering what happened to Edward Smith. He is leaving his post managing the Gothenburg Symphony, in Sweden’s No. 2 city. According to the orchestra a new replacement, Helena Wessman, currently the headmaster of the Academy of Music and Drama at the local university, starts October 1.

He won international fame as the manager who took the young Simon Rattle to prominence at the City of Birmingham Symphony. Not called to Berlin when Rattle took over the Berlin Philharmonic, he took the job in Gothenburg in 2004 and made news in 2007 by grabbing hot property Gustavo Dudamel, 26, as their music director. Dudamel, now the high-profile director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has recently extended his stay in Gothenburg to 2011.
