Gatti in Zurich

gatti165_neuItalian conductor Daniele Gatti will take the position of chief conductor – not music director – of the Zurich opera with the following season, 2009-10. It is a “happy moment” for Zurich’s boss, Alexander Pereira who will end his term in three years along with Gatti. (Pereira also takes over the Salzburg Festival in 2011.) La Scala’s loss is Zurich’s gain since the native Milanese was never called to take over there. He conducted the unevenly received opening night last December at the house, which has had no permanent conductor since the hasty departure of Riccardo Muti in 2005. He was under consideration also in Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, who decided a few weeks ago to extend Kent Nagano’s contract for another two years to make it correspond to the end of the current intendant’s contract. His first appearance in Zurich was with Verdi’s Requiem in December, 2008, and he was a hit with both the audience and the musicians, according to Pereira. Gatti is the new music director of the Orchestre National de France and conducts in major houses around the world.
